Is Vice President Dick Cheney the Fourth Branch of Government?

Branches of Government

Branches of Government:
1. Executive
2. Legislative
3. Judicial
4. Vice President Dick Cheney?

As you've probably heard by now, Vice President Dick Cheney claimed late last week that Executive Branch National Archives disclosure laws didn't apply to him because, as President of the Senate, he is not a member of the Executive Branch. (He of course has consistently claimed in the past that he is also protected from other disclosure laws as a member of the Executive Branch).

Setting aside the legal analysis for a while (is there really any legitimate legal analysis to be had here?), let's instead focus on the reactions of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Daily Show video coverage of Dick Cheney's claim he is not part of the Executive Branch:

Daily Show on this week's Presidential debates

I'll be honest - and I think I made it clear earlier this week - I don't find the presidential debates to be very interesting or insightful.

We're still 18 months before the election and there are 8-10 candidates on the stage, what are we supposed to get out of it? What with all the raise-your-hand questions and the hyper-focus of the moderators on terrorism and immigration, it seems like we'll all have to wait a long time to get much substance out of these candidates.

So, in the meantime, we can enjoy Jon Stewart making fun of it all.

Al Gore on the Daily Show

Al Gore's appearance on the Daily Show. He discusses his new book The Assault on Reason, the degradation of TV news coverage, the majority of Americans believing in a tie between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, and how Jon Stewart may be the solution to these problems.

Who needs the mainstream media when Jon Stewart can engage in a level-headed discussion about our Middle East Foreign Policy?

Jon Stewart and Resa Aslan discuss foreign policy in Iraq and Iran, including arguing against the necessity of a first strike against Iran or the likelihood of a Baghdad-centered emerging Caliphate.

Too bad Comedy Central is the only network engaging in discussions like this...

If you have the time, Aslan's book No God But God is a great history of Islam.

The problem with the Daily Show - Republican Presidential debate edition

The problem with the Daily Show (and Colbert) is that they only have new episodes four days a week, which means we've all had to wait days to get to see their coverage of last week's Republican Presidential debate.

Here goes:

Followed by John Oliver's pre-debate visit to (as he calls it) the birthplace of American Democracy: the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
